New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92 due to age-related medical conditions, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi confirmed.

Dr. Singh reportedly experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at his residence on December 26, following which resuscitative measures were initiated. He was rushed to AIIMS Delhi’s Medical Emergency at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts by the medical team, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, born in Punjab in 1932, was a renowned economist and statesman. He served two consecutive terms as the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. Known for his intellect and quiet leadership, he was instrumental in shaping India’s economic policies, particularly the landmark economic liberalization reforms of 1991.

Earlier this year, Dr. Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha after serving as a member of the Upper House for an impressive 33 years.

Tributes Pour In
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing Dr. Singh as one of India’s most distinguished leaders. “India mourns the loss of Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he became a respected economist and made extensive efforts to improve people's lives as Prime Minister. His wisdom and humility will always be remembered,” PM Modi wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

BJP President JP Nadda also paid tribute, calling Dr. Singh a visionary leader whose legacy will inspire generations. “A stalwart of Indian politics, he consistently advocated for the welfare of the downtrodden. His leadership earned admiration across party lines,” Nadda said.

AAP MP Raghav Chadha highlighted Dr. Singh’s pivotal role in India's 1991 economic reforms and his exemplary integrity. “I consider myself privileged to have worked alongside him in the Rajya Sabha. His legacy will endure and inspire generations,” Chadha wrote on X.

Legacy of Leadership
Dr. Manmohan Singh took office as Prime Minister in 2004 following the Congress Party’s victory in the general elections against the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government. He served two terms, concluding his tenure in 2014 when PM Narendra Modi succeeded him.

Known for his calm demeanor and intellect, Dr. Singh’s contributions extended beyond his premiership. As Finance Minister in 1991, he played a pivotal role in liberalizing the Indian economy, steering the country through a period of economic crisis.

India mourns the loss of a leader whose intellect, integrity, and dedication to public service left an indelible mark on the nation.
